I2 is a metallic gray solid at room temperature. It is slightly soluble in water. Its melting point is 113.7 ̊C (236.66 ̊F), boiling point 184.3 ̊C (363.74 ̊F), density 4.933 g/cm3. Iodine is an important nutrition. Iodine can also be used for sterilization. The iodine tincture which is made of iodine and potassium iodide solved in alcohol have a strong usage to kill pathogens. Iodine gas has a violet color.

Example Reactions:
• Cl2 + 2KI = I2 + 2KCl
• NO2 + 2KI + H2O = NO + I2 + 2KOH
• Cl2 + 2NaI = 2NaCl + I2
• 2Na + I2 = 2NaI
• I2 + 2Na2S2O3 = 2NaI + Na2S4O6
• 2CuSO4 + 2KI = K2SO4 + Cu2SO4 + I2
• 2KI + Br2 = 2KBr + I2
• Cl2 + 2LiI = 2LiCl + I2
• H2O2 + 2KI + H2SO4 = 2H2O + I2 + K2SO4
• SO2 + I2 + 2H2O = H2SO4 + 2HI
